TEQUEÑO - [TEH-KEHN-YO]

Originally from Los Teques, for Venezuelans, this delicious artisan cheese finger brings us memories of when we were kids: recess and snack time at school, the big “tequeñón” that our mom would pack in our lunch boxes, or the small bite-size hors d’oeuvre that we ate at birthday parties, baptisms, and weddings, with the delicious and traditional garlic sauce, or salsa rosada (ketchup and mayo blend).

Tequeños are a Venezuelan party staple. It is the most common hors d'œuvre at any Venezuelan party – baptisms, birthdays, weddings, you name it! They consist of white cheese wrapped in a thin, semi-sweet dough. They are most commonly fried, but can be oven-cooked as well. Traditionally tequeños are made just with cheese, but today, combinations like guava and cheese and ham and cheese are becoming more and more popular.

For any occasion, at any place the tequeño is traditional to Venezuelan culture. From what we are accustomed to, it is our pleasure to bring you something innovative – apart from our traditional cheese sticks, we are pleased to offer you guava and cheese tequeños, and ham and cheese tequeños.

Instructions: To fry them, defrost the Tequeños; heat oil in a deep fryer or pan to about medium-high heat. Wait until the oil starts shimmering. Add the tequeños and fry them until they are golden brown. If you see any of them opening up and the cheese showing, they are ready, so take them out immediately. Place them on a plate lined with a paper towel to absorb the excess oil until ready to serve. Accompany them with our delicious garlic sauce!
